Week 1 Reflections On A New Semester

Due to the relative infancy of this semester, there presents a lack of reflection to be had. While the lecture appeared as a standard introductory lecture to the unit, the content which hinted at future prospects within the semester were different to what I would have expected.

The idea of exploring future scenarios interested me as I realised the importance of designing for the future rather than simply the here and now. In particular I enjoyed the project to do with food cultivation after a rising sea level within London, this project enabled me to imagine a world where the role of cities are completely turned around from what is generally expected within the future. I expect that some fun can be had within this semester with regard to conceptual ideas and scenarios, however, I worry about the final output required within this class and whether such conceptual models can ever be transferred into concrete objects within the built environment.

Further examples, including the video simulation of the program "life", proved to be a really simple, elegant and effect method of presenting information about a different future, and I enjoyed seeing the ideas of others throughout the world. This may become a little harder when applied to architecture, however the basic ideas are the same.

In regards to the project at hand, I am starting to think more about choosing suburban or regional for my theme group selection as these areas ring true most to myself and therefore would be more likely to engage myself within the project.
